Seal Sitters is looking for dedicated, responsible people of all ages to become volunteers. All potential volunteers must attend training sessions to learn basic information on seal biology and behavior, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, as well as skills and protocol for interacting with and educating the public.

SEAL SITTER FAQS

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Establish safe boundaries to protect seal pups (or other marine mammals) and the general public. Keep dogs away from pups at all times. If volunteer, the pup or public is in immediate danger, call 911.

  2. Acquire knowledge of seals and sea lions and educate the public. Provide informational handouts. Always engage with the public in a professional, respectful manner.

  3. Abide by Seal Sitter, NOAA and Parks Department guidelines.


AGE REQUIREMENTS

All volunteers must sign liability waivers. Volunteers under age 18, must be accompanied by parent or guardian on their shift. Small children and pets are generally not appropriate to accompany volunteer. Seal sitting requires a quiet environment to assure that the pups feel secure and are able to rest onshore.
